Here at Perfect Shine we are strong advocates of more sustainable lifestyles and reducing our environmental impact. So of course we love the idea of reusable shopping bags, but as you may have heard, bacteria can build up in them if they aren’t properly cleaned. So we have a few tips for keeping you and your family safe while you are trying to save the planet!

1. Wash your reusable bags after each use. If the bags have instructions on how to wash them, follow those. Otherwise general rules of thumb for caring for your reusable bags are:

    • For woven canvas bags, wash in hot water with your usual detergent. You can line dry the bags or put them in the dryer.
    • For bags made of nylon or composite man-made fibers (like nonwoven polypropylene and recycled PET) hand wash or set the washing machine to the gentle cycle. Turn the bags inside out before washing and pay special attention to the nooks and crannies around the seams. DO NOT put these bags in the dryer on high heat, instead allow them to air dry.

2. Use more than one bag when shopping and separate your groceries when bagging by food type (meat, dairy, produce, cleaning supplies, etc.) It helps to label them as Meat, Produce, Dairy, Cleaning Supplies, or have bags with different colors or designs to make sure you are using the bag for only one type of good.

3. Do not leave unwashed bags in your car—we know that leaving them in your car helps you remember to use them, but please after you unload your groceries stick them in the wash and then place them back in your car! The extreme temperatures your car can experience (especially in the summer) creates the perfect incubator for the bacteria to grow and multiply.

Do you use reusable shopping bags to do your errands?

  1. Great ideas! Personally, I use re-usable bags for everything except meat products. With those, I accept them being bagged in plastic. Then, I re-use the plastic bags by cutting them, crocheting them into reusable bags!

More people need to be aware of the need to keep their bags clean, it’s their (and their family’s) health at risk!
