Slate floors are great in kitchens and bathrooms because they are slip resistant and durable, but to prevent scratching and keep them clean requires regular maintenance. Today we’ve got some tips and a simple natural recipe to get your slate floors in top shape!

  • Soft bristle broom
  • Quality dust mop (like a Swiffer)
  • Bucket
  • Warm water
  • Mild soap/detergent like Dr. Bronners
  • Wet mop (A Swiffer works here too, especially if you use reusable knit wet mop heads!)

  1. Using the soft bristled broom (this is essential to prevent scratching) sweep up dirt and debris from your floor.
  2. Take the dust mop and go over your floors again to remove fine particles and dust.
  3. Combine 1 gallon of hot water with about 1/4 cup of Dr. Bronners castile soap. If you have a smaller floor surface you can obviously cut this in half!
  4. Dip your wet mop into the water and wring out our shake out the excess water.
  5. Using smooth slow strokes mop your floor rinsing and ringing out your mop head frequently.
  6. You usually don’t need to rinse the floor, but if soap suds build up fill a bucket with warm water and mop again.
  7. Allow your slate floors to air dry!
