Thinking About Hiring A Cleaning Service? 5 Questions You Should Ask!

If the hustle and bustle of the holidays leaves you no time for cleaning, or if part of your New Years’ resolution is to spend more time doing meaningful things you may be thinking of getting a housecleaning service. Or maybe you just really hate to clean your house and are finally considering other alternatives. Housekeeping services can actually work in many families budgets. It’s all about prioritizing the things that are most important to you. If cleaning your home takes up half your weekend, you may consider bi-weekly or weekly professional cleaning so that you can spend that time doing things you love. There are many options to consider when choosing a cleaner. Prices vary greatly, quality too, and you can go with an insured cleaning company, or an independent housekeeper. Regardless of whom you entrust to clean your home, at Perfect Shine there are a few questions we think you should always ask!

  1. Do they provide a free consultation and estimate? Most cleaning companies will at least provide an estimate over the phone or offer free in-home consultations when you contact them. One of the first questions you should ask when you call or email a company or individual is whether they offer a consultation.
  2. Are they insured or licensed? If you are concerned about the safety of your belongings and home you may opt for a cleaning service that is insured. That way if by some awful chance an accident does occur recovering your losses is less of a headache. Most individual housekeepers aren’t insured so it’s important to ask.
  3. Do they have references? If the company is larger read yelp reviews or customer testimonials. Smaller cleaning companies will often (or should) provide you with a list of references you can call. When you call references don’t forget to ask about quality, whether they are reliable and on-time, and whether they are upfront about cost.
  4. What is included in the cleaning and what additional options are available? This one may seem obvious but sometimes it is easy to overlook the details. Regardless of whether your estimate is done over the phone or in-home you want to ask what actually gets cleaned. Do they wash windows, clean appliances (outside, inside, or both), wash baseboards, make beds, etc. You can also see if they have laundry or organizational services that could free up more of your time. It would be a good idea to create a list of the things you want cleaned and how you want them cleaned ahead of time so you can express your needs clearly.
  5. What products do they use? This might not matter to some people, but if you have children or pets or chemical sensitivities this is an important question. Ask what methods and products they use in each part of the house. Ask whether they use eco-friendly products, or if they would be willing to use your own homemade natural cleaners. You are the customer, so make sure your requests or needs are met!

These 5 basic questions are a great starting point when selecting a cleaning service. What other questions would you ask?

  1. One important thing you left out – do they background check and routinely drug screen their employees!
